The Feeling of Pool Ownership

By: Gunter Walderon

You may be surprised to know that research shows that most people make decisions based more on emotions than logic. There are those who feel that all decision making is emotional in origin. If you doubt this, think of the last car commercial you saw on television. In this time of increasing traffic-related injuries and sky-rocketing gas prices, the safety features and great gas mileage of the car might have been briefly mentioned, but most of the ad focused on the happy and good-looking driver gliding swiftly and easily around bends and over bumps, feeling the power of the car coursing through his or her veins. Obviously, the advertisement was intended to tap the readers' feelings rather than their reasoning processes.

So what about a big decision, like having a pool put in your backyard? Consider the general emotions that the possession of a pool yield and decide if it fits you properly.

There are those for whom owning a pool means elevated status in their neighborhood. Some people never use their pool for swimming, but they like to possess it for the maintenance of their social status along with their communal and business relations. This so-called "pride of ownership" is not a sinful pride as it has helpful results in any neighborhood. When one has "pride of ownership," such things as taking care of one's lawns and making sure the driveway doesn’t look like a junkyard are important.

Others feel that having a pool provides an escape from the stresses of life. The rise and fall of ripples in the pool soothes the straining nerves of a man after a day’s hard toil and gives him the feeling that he enjoys only in a cozy resort. To have a pool is essential to the emotional health of this person.

Some people consider owning a pool a necessity for home entertaining. Consider throwing a pool party with tiki torches glowing off of the ripples in the water at your Hawaiian Luau, a piñata hanging over the pool waiting to release pool toys for your child's Mexican Fiesta birthday party, or stringing a volleyball net across the pool for a beach-themed pool party. There are innumerable ways to provide guests that with hours of fun when you own a pool.

A good number of parents consider the possession of a pool to be an unavoidable part of entertainment for their children in summer. In the pool, kids seem to always enjoy playing. As the children play outside and exhaust their energy supply, parents can relax as they control the safety aspects of who comes in the backyard, who swims in the pool, and who need to be kept away from the pool.

Homeowners who install a swimming pool probably do so with some combination of these motivations. Without ignoring all the psychological and emotional traits, the important things that exist must be treated reasonably and with some logic. As an example of the necessity of doing your research prior to signing a contract, in 2006 in the Sacramento area a pool company caused a scandal when they failed to complete and/or installed defective pools for many homeowners. Elicit the help of a reputable, credible company and do your homework by checking several of the company's references. Whether you are building a swimming pool or adding an addition before you sign any contract papers, it is wise to check with the State Contractor License Board.

By taking the time to thoroughly research the available companies at the beginning, you will ensure your emotional satisfaction remains in tact and even increases throughout the construction of your dream pool.
