Google clearly lags behind in social networking. Orkut which is doing good in Brazil and India has not shown too much visibility in USA and UK. Facebook which blossomed last year is intrepidly leading the social networks arena.
Facebook edged all social networking sites as it opened its service to outside developers which allowed thousands of small programs to explode that could run on the Facebook site. These programs have been liked and adopted by millions of site users already.
Google is not ignorant of this fact and is now looking to team up with other social network sites like Hi5, Linkedin, Plaxo and Friendster and planning ways and setting up standards to allow software developers to write programs for Orkut and others.
While Google is still careworn, Facebook has taken the plunge in this arena and is already leading. Google has now planned to gang up Facebook by teaming up with all major social networks and creating a platform for developers of more than 100 million users. This means more than double of what Facebook currently has.
No doubt that users and developers will only benefit from the Google-Facebook fight as they will have more open networking. Developers will blush and will have more avenues and more work.
Google seems to have taken on Facebook, however at this stage Facebook undoubtedly is the bull which Google seems to be taking by the horns.
